On Wednesday Goochland Middle School students and staff gathered to recognize Black History Month. The event included an opening message from Ms. Jennifer Smith, Principal, followed by an impressive performance by the Goochland High School Dance Ensemble. Mr. Jay Sykes, GMS Band Director, took the stage next to narrate an overview of some of history’s most accomplished musical figures including Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, and Louis Armstrong.
Mr. Sykes turned the stage over to Chloe Lyda, GMS eighth grader, who masterfully recited a poem by Frederick Douglas. Chloe was followed by Kindrick Braxton, Dominique Tompkins, and Sallie Woodson – all GMS students – who shared the accomplishments of Martin Luther King, Jr., Jackie Robinson, and Maggie Walker.
The event closed with a keynote address by Mr. Sekou Shabaka, President, Goochland NAACP, who delivered a timeless message of hope, success, and the inherent good found in the human spirit.
